Free Excel skills test

Take a free Excel test in a live sheet. Every answer checked.

Eight tasks in 20 minutes: a SUMIFS, a two-condition lookup, IF, $ anchors, cleaning dates and text, a variance, a COUNTIFS and rounding. Write each formula yourself in a spreadsheet in your browser, and see which task you'd lose before the real test does.

Eight tasks, 20 minutes, one live sheet.

  • · Spreadsheet tasks against the clock
  • · Use a laptop or desktop: you work in a browser spreadsheet
  • · The clock keeps running if you leave or refresh
Full rules

Build spreadsheet answers against the clock. See your score when you finish, then choose what to practice next. Each marked cell is checked for the right number and for a formula that works it out from the sheet, so any correct formula counts and a typed-in number does not.

It checks selected Excel skills, not every one an employer might test, and does not predict a hiring result.

No account needed. Your score is free. After finishing, you can enter your email to unlock the question-by-question results here: your answers, correct values and worked formulas. This does not subscribe you to marketing emails.

The timer starts when you begin and keeps running if you leave or refresh. Keep this page open and active for automatic submission; background tabs may not submit in time. If you return after time expires, saved answers cannot be submitted and your attempt closes at zero. You can retake the test after a wait from your last attempt.

What the test asks

The tasks people describe from real Excel tests, each in its own small sheet.

TaskWhat it checks
1. Total sales for one region over a run of monthsSUMIFS with a bound on each side, and both end months counted
2. Find a price by product and sizeA lookup on two conditions, not the first match on one
3. Pay commission by tierIF or IFS, tested in the right order, with a rep exactly on a threshold
4. Fill a revenue grid from one formula$ anchors that survive copying across and down
5. Turn exported text into real datesTRIM, cutting text apart, and DATE
6. Budget against actualPercentage variance, measured against the right number
7. Count deals in a stage above a sizeCOUNTIFS with a match and a bound
8. Invoice a rounded priceROUND at the step where the price is set

Any correct formula counts. A typed-in number doesn't.

  • Any formula that gets the right number from the sheet counts. XLOOKUP, INDEX/MATCH or SUMIFS for the lookup; IFS or nested IF for the tiers.
  • A typed-in number is marked wrong, as a reviewer would mark it. Every marked cell needs a formula.
  • A task with several cells counts when all of them are right, so one bad $ anchor in the grid costs the task.

What you get at the end

  • Your score, task by task, the moment you finish: "7 of 8 tasks · 16 min · built in a live sheet".
  • A public result link you can share, with the sample size beside any percentile.
  • The first task you missed, worked through for free. The full breakdown, with the formula for each task, by email if you want it.

Questions

Is it multiple choice?
No. Each task is a small spreadsheet. You write the formulas, and the test marks the numbers they produce.
Does my formula have to match yours?
No. Any formula that works the right number out from the sheet counts. A number typed in does not, because that is not what a reviewer is checking.
Do I need Excel?
No, a laptop or desktop with a browser. The formulas are the ones you'd type in Excel. Keyboard shortcuts differ a little, and one task tells you about the one function that behaves differently here.
What is not covered?
Pivot tables, charts, drop-down lists, formatting and VBA. If your test is mostly those, practice them in Excel itself.
Is this a Microsoft certification?
No. FinX isn't affiliated with Microsoft. Your result is a record of one attempt at this test, and we don't call it a certificate.
Can I take it again?
Yes, 7 days after your last attempt, on a different set of numbers asking the same eight tasks.
What happens to my email?
Nothing, unless you give it. The score is free without one. An email saves your full breakdown, and we send anything else only if you tick the separate box.
